My First Giveaway

When I started my Substack newsletter a few months ago, I wasn’t sure which exclusives to provide for paid subscribers besides articles. Earlier this week I discovered that I was sent a review copy of the new Flicker Alley release of the Argentine film noir Never Open That Door (No abras nunca esa puerta,1952). I had also preordered a copy, so now I have two. But not for long.

I’ll have a review of this release posted in a few days, but in the meantime, I’m offering paid subscribers only a chance to win a brand-new unopened copy of the film.

If you’re unfamiliar with Flicker Alley, let me assure you that they do outstanding work. Never Open That Door and many of their other releases include a region-free Blu-ray AND a DVD. (I love that!) You’ll also find a 20-page booklet with rare original photos and ephemera.

Flicker Alley goes the extra mile with special features, and this disc is no exception. In addition to the supplements, Flicker Alley provides an entire bonus feature: If I Should Die Before I Wake (Si muero antes de desperate), originally planned as the third segment of Never Open That Door, but was released as a stand-alone feature. Here’s how it will work:

1. Again, this drawing is only for paid subscribers to Journeys in Darkness and Light. If you’re already a paid subscriber, you’re automatically entered into the drawing unless you tell me otherwise.

2. If you’re not a paid subscriber and would like to be one, become a paid subscriber no later than June 21, 2024, 11:59 pm ET, the deadline for eligibility for the drawing. (Paid subscriptions start at $5 a month.)

3. I will randomly pick one paid subscriber and announce the results in a separate post after June 21.

4. Shipping to U.S. addresses only.
