The Dark Pages
20 Years (and Counting) of Film Noir Writing
If you’re already subscribing to my Substack newsletter, Journeys in Darkness and Light, thank you! I can’t tell you how much it means to have you join me on these journeys, and I hope you enjoy them all. Today I’d like to tell you about The Dark Pages, a print newsletter focusing on film noir. The Dark Pages has been around for quite awhile, recently celebrating 20 years of film noir writing.
The Dark Pages, edited by Karen Burroughs Hannsberry, is available bi-monthly in print or digital editions. Each 8-page issue includes film noir movie reviews, biographies of featured performers, memorable quotes, guest essays, photos, and more. There’s also a special giant issue each year, and this year’s entry is going to be amazing.
I’m honored to be one of the staff writers for The Dark Pages, contributing reviews, essays, and a regular What’s New in Film Noir? segment spotlighting new releases on physical media. You’ll also find a variety of terrific writers in each issue.
In the latest edition, I contributed an essay on Obsession (aka The Hidden Room, 1949), a film still available on the Criterion Channel and a new region-free Blu-ray from Indicator. You’ll also find a feature by Kristina Dijon on three Edmond O’Brien films, an essay on the B-noir Destination Murder (1950) by Melanie Shawn, a review of The Clay Pigeon (1949) by Bruce Dettman, and more.
