My question isn’t about what movies or shows you’re watching, but rather something else.
I had cataract surgery on my left eye three days ago. I’d known this was coming for several months since driving at night had become increasingly problematic. The cataract particularly challenged me when I was in a room with bright lights or watching a movie with high-contrast lighting. In any scene set in darkness or semi-darkness, the presence of light morphed into a cloud lacking definition. It drove me crazy.
I knew cataract surgery would make life better, but I had no idea how much better. And it’s only been three days. My left eye still hasn’t settled in, which usually takes a couple of weeks, but the difference is stunning.
Even after one day, the world looked bigger and brighter. I looked at a painting on our living room wall, closing my right eye. Wow, I had no idea the colors were so vivid! Then I viewed the painting again with my left eye closed. The picture I saw with my right eye was dingy, like someone hadn’t cleaned the glass covering it for a few years. This experiment proved true regardless of what I viewed.
And the definition with the left eye was astounding. (This isn’t the painting I saw, but rather a 1080/4K comparison, which isn’t as drastic as what I’m experiencing, but it gives you an idea.)
Then I popped in a couple of Blu-rays. Yowza, what a difference! The colors popped, and the contrasts knocked me out. Now I understand what a Blu-ray can do. Even more, I understand why I was never completely impressed with my friends’ 4K players/screens. Now I may have to get a 4K player and… buy some discs…
But what I really want to do is have surgery on my right eye since I’m only seeing half the colors, contrasts, etc.
If you’ve had cataract surgery and had a similar cinematic revelation (at home or in theaters), please share your thoughts. In the meantime, I’ll be going through my entire collection.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned.
Andy...congrats! I had this surgery one year ago last May 2024. I had both eyes done and had to have an new type of lens installed in one of my eyes and they had to dilute my pupils to the point it took several weeks for my eyesight to return but boy, like you I was stunned at the improvement. I guess you really do get used to the deterioration and when it comes back, you forgot how good you used to be able to see. I'm so happy for you.
